John Wurm Family

John Wurm, eldest son of John Christian and Hellena (Becker) Wurm, was born 20 April 1822 in Germany and died 3 Sept 1877 in Seneca County, Ohio.  His wife wife, Catherine W. (Kuina) Wurm, died about 1849.  (Catherine's maiden name is spelled both Kuina and Quina in St. Stephen church records.)  On 23 Sept 1850 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Seneca County, Ohio, John married Christina (Haug/Hauck) Lehman.  Christina was the widow of Joseph Lehman.  She was born 12 Dec 1814 in Baden, Germany and died 8 Sept 1887 in Venice Township, Seneca County, Ohio.

John Wurm had seven children:

1 - John Christian "Christ" Wurm, son of John & Catherine (Kuina) Wurm (24 Aug 1845-17 May 1924)
2 - Mary Anna Wurm, daughter of John & Catherine (Kuina) Wurm (1847-Aug 1889)
3 - Eliam Wurm, son of John & Catherine (Kuina) Wurm, was born 17 Aug 1849 and baptised at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Seneca County, Ohio on 20 Aug 1849.  Sponsors were Michael Steinmetz and Elizabeth Zinn.  It is believed Eliam died in infancy.  He was not enumerated with the family in the 1850 census.
4 - Philip John Wurm, son of John & Christina (Haug) Wurm (1851-28 July 1939)
5 - Otto Virgel Wurm, son of John & Christina (Haug) Wurm (4 Dec 1853-?)
6 - Isidor Wurm, son of John & Christina (Haug) Wurm (23 March 1856-11 June 1934)
7 - Ellen Christina Wurm, daughter of John & Christina (Haug) Wurm (26 Oct 1858-1 Sept 1939)

Although they are not direct Wurm descendants, I am including below some information on the family of Christina (Haug) Wurm by her first husband, Joseph Lehman.  The Lehmans were another pioneer family of the St. Stephen area, and numerous among their descendants have married into the Wurm family.

Joseph Lehman, son of Nicholas and Marie Anne "Mary Ann" (Biam) Lehman, was born about 1814, probably at Schirrhein, Alsace, France.  He died 24 Nov 1849.  Joseph and Christina (Haug) Lehman had six known children:

1 - William Lehman (1836-1874) who married Sophia Bochel and had seven known children: Mary Cecilie Lehman, Margaret Christina Lehman, Joseph Andrew Lehman, John A. Lehman, Ludwina Caroline Lehman, William Edward Lehman and Mary Esther Lehman.
2 - Nancy Anna Lehman (about 1838-1923) who married Daniel McCarthy and had twelve children: Timothy J. McCarthy, Christina (McCarthy) Clark, William McCarthy, John McCarthy, Jacob McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Barbara McCarthy, Helena (McCarthy) Casanova, Michael McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, Philip McCarthy, and Dionsyiam Daniel McCarthy
3 - Rufina Lehman (about 1843-?) who married Frederick Wofard and had thirteen children: Ida Christine (Wofard) Blust, Maria Henrica (Wofard) Fink, Ottilia Caroline Wofard, Maria Cecilia Wofard, Eleanora Louisa Wofard, Christina Josephine (Wofard) Witschner, Charles Augustus Wofard, Frederick William Wofard, Eulalia Sophia (Wofard) Vidoni, Otto Leo Wofard, Rosa Elizabeth Wofard, Elizabeth Rosa (Wofard) Huisman, and a daughter whose name is unknown.  (Note - there seem to be various spellings for Wofard including Wolfard and Wolfert.)
4 - Mary E. Lehman (1846-1849)
5 - Anthony Lehman (about 1847-1877)
6 - Leo Lehman (about 1848-?) who married Cecilia Ball and had eight known children: Joseph Phillip Lehman, John William Lehman, Otto Virgil Lehman, Christina Cecilia Lehman, Mary Clara Lehman, Victoria Henrietta Lehman, Clement Laurent Lehman and Maria Margaret Lehman.

  1. Another alternate spelling for John Wurm's first wife: Cuenin? I suspect she might be the eldest child of Joseph Cuenin, who had 40 acres in Sandusky in 1835, shows up in St Stephens baptism records in 1845 (farm failed?) and then is a peddler/grocer in Detroit by 1849. There he and "Catharina Worm of Venice Twp" witness a marriage at Ste Anne on 7 May between Michel Weibel and Louise Rouche -- perhaps family ties there too? I don't yet know. But Weibel and Rouche are from the western side of the Rhine region (Alsace, Franche-Comté) so that's where I'm looking for Cuenins now. Possibly Wurms there too?
